ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF DISASTERS AND ECONOMIC EVENTS ON MISSISSIPPI SEAFOOD AND COASTAL TOURISM INDUSTRIES SINCE 2000

Impact assessments are necessary for supporting disaster applications and management options for states affected by disasters.

The SEAFOOD LANDINGS ASSESSMENT MODEL (SLAM) or the JOBS AND INCOME ASSESSMENT MODEL estimate the direct impacts when the current commercial landings and dockside values or number of jobs and total incomes fall below their benchmark values.T

The benchmark values are the means for the selected benchmark period. The benchmark period is suggested to be at least three years before the disaster. The annual data on commercial landings and dockside values were compiled from the NOAA Fisheries website. The number of jobs and average income data were compiled from Lightcast website.

Three benchmark periods were selected. The first was before Hurricane in 2005 (2000-2004). The second was before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 and Bonnet Carre Spillway opening in 2011 (2007-2009). The third was before the Bonnet Carre Spillway opening in 2019 and the global COVID-19 pandemic (2015-2018). The direct losses computed are from 2005-2009, 2010-2014, and 2019-2023, expressed in pounds and dockside sales or number of jobs and total incomes lost yearly.
